U2 seems to enjoy forcing their music on people unexpectedly, and yesterday, straphangers navigating Grand Central’s subway labyrinth were coerced into attending a concert with Bono & Friends, who performed "Angel of Harlem" by the 42nd Street S shuttle. Cute that you thought you’d be able to read in peace.

Stereogum reports the surprise concert was orchestrated by (who else) Jimmy Fallon, who will be hosting the band on The Tonight Show on Friday. Apparently the whole gang’s been taping segments around town in preparation, and a lot of people who look like tourists got a sneak peek:

Unbelievable! U2/Jimmy Fallon performing at Grand Central #onlyinnewyork #grateful #jimmyfallon #u2

It seems like Mario Batali was also there, for some reason:

And it appears the band was sequestered behind a chain, for they are precious cargo:

  • U2’s Tonight Show appearance comes nearly six months after the band was forced to reschedule their weeklong residency with Fallon, thanks to a bike accident that seriously injured Bono. That accident, which left the frontman with a badly damaged left arm, shoulder blade and hand, was reportedly recreated for another Fallon segment over the weekend.
